Has anybody purchased this all-in-one? And an important question: Does it work in Windows 10? Wingmen won't follow orders to attack ground targets, and the game sometimes has aircraft perform in missions that don't make sense. Aircraft without night fighting capability, for example, sometimes receive nighttime assignments.
The opponent defenses are completely silent with no anti-aircraft gunfire or surface-to-air missiles to worry about. That may be a good thing, because the manual is weak and skips both ground attack and missile defense instruction. Planning for a mission is pointless; other than choosing the weapons the plane will carry, there's little to do because the planning tool permits only minimal changes to the route and the map lacks useable levels of zoom.
Air-to-air combat fares better. The missile systems in Strike Fighters represent early systems prone to failure, and they operate in appropriately cantankerous fashion. The artificial intelligence flies competently and tail gunners in craft like the IL Beagle will fire at attackers.
Wingmen are much more enthusiastic about engaging in air combat, though they will engage without first jettisoning extra weight like bombs or tanks. There's also some good radio chatter between pilots and air traffic controllers. Strike Fighters also includes a solid suite of useful snapshots and external and a padlock views. The end result is that Strike Fighters ends up being a fair dogfighting simulation, but falls short in its efforts to deliver the strike experience.
There's plenty of gameplay in running the single missions and campaigns, but the broken or missing features leave the product feeling empty. The Harrier was developed directly from the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel prototype aircraft, following the cancellation of a more advanced supersonic aircraft, the Hawker Siddeley P. It also combines the work of many other modders, in order to provide a realistic, better looking sky. Here below a quick summary of the changes: -Tweaked sky colours, something in between Cellinsky's widesky and the stock SF2 colours.
In addition, the package includes alternative environment configuration files in the Alternative Weather folder; they enable different effects for the Inclement weather. You can choose between thunderstorm default, adapt for most terrains , snowstorm for cold, icy terrains and sandstorm for hot, desert terrains. For those who wish not to change the effect globally, I highly suggest to try the included terrain-specific environment files, provided for both stock terrains and custom ones I released; the default global effect is thunderstorm, while terrains with their own environment file either use sandstorm or snowstorm as appropriate.
Use this as a basis to customize other terrains. By setting the Effects to Unlimited, the game makes use of a DirectX 10 post processing effect; the stock game's post processing shader generates a pointless and horrible bloom effect which excessively blinds the player during twilight transitions. FX which provides more contrast, more vignetting, minor color correction and a daytime-only bloom effect, so it's miles better than what the stock game offers.
Alternative post processing tweaks are included in the Alternative Shaders folder; choose the one you wish to try check the included screenshots for fast comparisons and overwrite the default one in your mod's Flight folder. If you don't care about the post processing effect, you may want to set the game's Effects to High in the Options menu.
